A minimum of 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
